Overview

swfShrink is a Java-based freeware that enables to (re-)compress images of a Flash movie to reduce its file size.

Features in version V0.1:

• manual selection of images to (re-)compress (only 32 bit lossless compressed images)
  
• manual tuning of the JPG quality for each recompressed image
• direct visualisation of compression loss on each image
• direct calculation of the compression rate for each JPG quality

Planed features for future version :

• recompression of color-paletted images
  
• recompression of already JPG-compressed images

Installation

Windows

• Download swfShrink.win.zip
• Unzip the content of this file somewhere on your disk
• double-click on file swfShrink.exe
• Important : if you don't have a Java machine installed on your machine, swfShrink will prompt you to download and install JRE 1.4.2 (download the JRE, not the SDK !) here : http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html. This version 1.4.2 is sufficient to run swfShrink, and is lighter to download than the latest Java machine here : http://www.java.com/getjava

Mac Os X

• Download swfShrink.OsX.zip
• Unzip the content of this file somewhere on your disk (avoid directory included in a directory with a space in its name, some user reported it could couse toubles to launch)
• double click on application swfShrink
• Important : you should have a Java machine installed on your machine with a version higher than 1.4.1. This Java machine should be included in your Mac Os X installation, but If you don't have one, please go the Apple web site to upgrade your configuration : http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/java2se50release1.html. • Important : to work properly on Mac, swfShrink application should not be in an inclusion of folders with one having a space in its name. Don't name your folder like "swfShrink Folder", but rather like "swfShrinkFolder" or "swfShrink_Folder".

All machines (Windows, Mac Os X, Linux, Unix, ...)

If you are comfortable with the use of a Java machine

• Download swfShrink.multi.zip
• Unzip the content of this file somewhere on your disk
• launch the JAR file with a command like :

java -Xmx256M -jar swfShrink.jar

Typical launchers are available : runWindows.bat, runUnixLinuxOsX.sh

How to use

Using swfShrink is very easy and intuitive :

1. launch swfShrink
2. it will prompt you to choose a Flash movie, select a .swf file
3. the first image is then displayed with its compression rate evaluation for the default JPG quality
4. change the JPG quality and press [Eval] button to get a new evaluation of the compression rate, and see the effect on JPG damages
5. if the result is satisfying, click the [compress] checkbox to decide whether the image should be compressed or not
6. you can navigate through images using [Prev] and [Next] buttons
7. when you are ready with all images, press [Save] button
